Has anyone read any good books about Joan of Kent and the Black Prince? Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I read the reviews for The First Princess of Wales by Karen Harper and they were not very good.

I've read the First Princess of Wales and it was OK.  My knowledge of the regency during that time period is sketchey so I was a little lost with those references.  It seemed to me there was too much romance but I still think it gives an overall veiw of the couple.  I am also interested in reading more about the "Black Prince".

They do play fairly substantial roles in Plaidy's Vow on the Heron (about Edward III) and Passage to Pontefract (about Richard II) - in the later part of the former and the first part of the latter.  You can often find them on ebay.

There is also a book by Juliet Dymoke called Lady of the Garter which is about Joan of Kent.  I have it but haven't read it yet. You can also find it on ebay.

The Wikipedia article on the Black Prince has a couple of suggestions:

  • Edward makes appearances in Conan Doyle's historical novels The White Company and Sir Nigel
  • Edward and Joan are supporting characters in The Lady Royal, by Molly Costain Haycraft, a fictional accounting of the life of Edward's sister Isabella.
  • Edward and Joan also appear in supporting roles in Anya Seton's 1954 novel Katherine, about Edward's brother John's romance with Katherine Swynford.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I did read Katherine and it's one of my favorite books.

I read an interview with Sharon Kay Penman some years ago, that after Devil's Brood, she wanted to write about John of Gaunt and Owain Glyndwr. That story would surely have mention of the Black Prince since he was John's brother. I'm not sure if the book will ever get written, because of her health problems, but one can always hope!
