I recently ordered a book.  The sender PM'ed me that she didn't know whether she would mail the book for 1 credit because it was a fairly large and heavy book and she was unsure what the postage would be on it but told me what wonderful condition it was in.  She then stated that she might possibly send it for 2 or 3 credits.  I canceled my order for the book and told her thanks but no thanks.  I have mailed out many heavy books in my day for only 1 credit.  Did I handle this okay?

As far as I know, she's not allowed to do that.  I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure I'm not.  It's 1 book, 1 credit.  Period.

Yes. 1 book = 1 credit. That is it. How selfish of her to ask for more! I would have reminded her that these are the basics of this site!

I would have been very frustrated.

Yes you did good.  I would also report her to PBS because asking for more then 1 credit for a book is against the rules. THe next person she does this to could be a new member who might think this is OK.

Aside from saying no, I'd also report her to PBS so they can remind her that this site is one book for one credit

I just looked at her personal page and she is a new member.  She has only been a member for a few days and was probably not aware that she couldn't ask for more than 1 credit.  I will PM her and let her know the rules, so that she is aware of them next time and not post books she is not willing to mail because of their size.

The PBS Terms of Use state that each book is equal to 1 credit, audio books are 2 credits.  And by violating the Terms of Use, this member is putting her membership at risk.  Members don't have to like it, but they do have to abide by the terms, if they wish to keep their memberships.  Nobody is forcing her to post this particular book and if she thinks it's worth more than 1 credit, she can find someplace else to list it.  As Mary said, which is an excellent point, if this type of practice isn't nipped in the bud immediately, then a new member might think it's okay.

I understand your reluctance to report her, but at the very least, I would explain to her what is being explained here.

Since she's new, I would be reluctant to report her to PBS but I would definitely PM her and explain that she can't ask for more than one credit per book here.  I'd copy/paste the help center guidelines about it so she's clear that it's in the site rules and encourage her to contact her Tour Guide or post in the forums with any more questions she may have.

This is why new members really need to read the rules and guidelines.  I'm constantly amazed at people who don't do this.  It's very frustrating.

Becky, until TPTB perfect a way to deliver a wedgie via PM, I think you handled it the best way you could.  :)

Thanks everyone!  I did send her a PM to let her know it was against PBS rules to ask for more than one credit per book and to wish her good luck with this site.  So far, I have not heard back from her.  Bernhard just to let you know, I have mailed books to our military personnel and find it the least that I can do to fill out the customs form.  I hope that they enjoy the books and forget their problems for a little while at least!

Hmmm, I don't know about wedgies, but I have taken part in e-mail pillow and water balloon fights, and those are a blast, so bring on the PM wedgie feature. I'm game. ;-)

On my own forums we actually have a smiley that gives wedgies.  :)

There are other book trading sites that allow you to set the number of credits you require to send a book (FR is one), so this newbie may have been a member of another site and assumed they all work the same way. Yes, she should have read the rules for PBS more closely, but I think it was probably not so much a case of being selfish as just not knowing that this site does not run like the others. She'll probably be glad to know that rules so that she can determine whether or not to list her heavier books here.
