Today is the anniversary of the venerable paper founded in 1851 by Henry J. Raymond who had been fired from the New York Tribune by Horace Greeley. Raymond modeled the NYTimes on The London Times and issued 5,000 copies of his premier edition which sold for a penny a copy.

I read the NY Times on line every day. Once in a while I even buy a copy of the Sunday edition. I notice that TimesSelect is now free, and anyone can read the opinion columnists online without paying a fee.
