Long and detailed, often too wordy, this book weaves together the varied threads of Hawaii's past. It's interesting and quasi-historical, but I found myself skimming past large chunks--political intrigue, family plotting, just too much information--that really weren't needed to tell the story.

I love Hawaii (the state) and liked Hawaii (the book) okay - I don't know if it's a shift in "political correctness" or what - I found his "preachiness" heavy-handed and in many cases, wrong-minded.

The characters are very well-drawn however, and you care very much what happens to each of them, all the while wanting to shout at them that they're messing up something wonderful!

I had read this book years ago, just rented the movie and wanted to re-read the book. Enjoyed it even more this time.

Storyteller Michener brings his trademark style this saga of the history and people of the
South Pacific. Another winner, especially for fans of historical fiction.
