All Thomas wants to be is a doctor but left an orphan by a terrible tragedy he has no means to achieve that dream until a meeting in an alley with a doctor at a teaching school. Thomas moves back to practice medicine in his hometown and is content until the Civil War intrudes. Urged to join the medical corps of the North, Thomas does not want to be involved. However, his son and daughter are soon involved and the lives of the Black family will never be the same.
I really like books set in the Civil War era but the principals in this story just were not as strong as I would have liked them to be, I kept waiting for more. I also felt like there was an inadequate wrap up of the story - it left me wanting a sequel or at least another chapter or two.
