If you like noir mysteries, this one is for you. It takes place in Britain in 1955. The protagonist is a former SOE operative during World War II, and still suffers from some things he did. Plus, "old friends" from that time will soon visit him. This just complicates matters as he is a trouble-shooter for a British B-movie producer who is having problems with an actress whose "boy friend" is something he shouldn't be.

This is book one of a two-book series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this inventive novel. The publisher calls it a "historical mystery," but that doesn't do it justice. The protagonist is an underemployed "no, I'm not a detective" who slides into an espionage puzzle.

The setting is post-war England, where people who have lost their moorings are struggling to rebuild their lives and their country. The author is a skilled inventor of quirky characters with a remarkable ability to describe a scene.

Noir fans of Alan Furst, Philip Kerr, and David Downing should take a look at a similar talent who is mining the intrigue of the following decade.
