I am new to PBS (since last week).   I already have books posted, and have mailed three books that were requested.

The very first book I requested is one I was very excited to receive.   Today the person who posted it wrote me and told me she had sent the wrong book to the me and another requester.    The book I requested was evidently damaged in the mail.    I have not received a book yet in the mail.   The person who posted the book is extremely concerned about the other person getting the right book.   She did not mention anything in her first email about crediting me for the damaged book.  :-(    But she did ask me to send the book (wrong book, sent erroneously to me), when received, to the other person.

I wrote her back and asked for a credit for the damaged book that  I will not be receiving (the book I requested).    She said she would send me two credits if I will (1) mark the book received and (2) send the second book to the other person.   I am uncomfortable with this situation, because I haven't received the book, and I just want to receive my credit back for the damaged book.   

I want to do the right thing for the other person who received a wrong book and would be happy to either post the book so she can request it, or send it on if I am compensated.

But this whole situation makes me uncomfortable, and I am extremely disappointed that this happened on my very first transaction here.

I'd message someone from live help and ask before I did anything in that situation.  Make someone aware of it and get some knowledgeable advice before you give up another credit.  That's just me.

you won't be giving another credit if you mark the book received...the one you "gave" has already been deducted from your account.

what the person is asking is legit but don't do anything until she gives you the 2 credits.  What she is doing is giving you back your credit for the book you won't receive and one to compensate for mailing the book to the correct person.

oh and don't mark the wrong book received until it is actually received just in case it doesn't arrive.

hope that helps!  everyone is really nice and most transactions don't happen like that...promise!

Thanks Kim and Leslie for the replies.   I didn't even know there was a Live Help!   I sent a PM to someone there as well.  Thanks for the help and advice on this.   I am just feeling a little overwhelmed as a newbie to PBS.  I hope my next transaction is smoother!

If it were me, I'd not mark the book received because you won't receive it.  I'd let it go lost in the mail.  I'd ask her to buddy me two credits as she has agreed to do and mail the book on to it's rigthtful owner once it arrives.  Either that, or I'd ask her to ask the other person to mail the book to me, and then I'd mark it as received and damaged by USPS (if you trust that she is being truthful about how the damage occured).

A bit confusing, I know, but this is a rare occurence.

Sorry you had a bad experience first time out. Don't give up! The vast majority of my transactions here have gone swimmingly. : )

First off welcome to PBS.  things will get better.
I understand how frustrated you are for this to happen your first time out. But it does happen.
 I have done it myself and it is very embarrassing.  The 3 of us just had to trust one another and we all did the right thing. I actually sent both the lady's a second book of their choice, to compensate for their inconvenience. So consider how you would feel if you had been the one to make that mistake. believe me you definitely want to feel like you can depend on the other 2 people involved.

I have been on the other end also, where I had to send out the book I received on to another person, and I received an extra credit to compensate for the postage expense.

You should contact your tour guide for help, just to make you feel better and be sure and keep your PM's. Also start reading the help sections to better familiarize yourself with common solutions.

Don't mark the book received if you know you aren't going to get it. If the book was damaged in the mail, then you will either get your credit back when the book is marked lost in the mail on the System Action Date (it's on your screen), or the sender can send in a feedback from the Contact Us link at the bottom of the screen and ask to have the transaction canceled early.

Do send the wrong book to the person who ordered it. The sender should give you a credit to cover your expense of doing this.

Summary -- sender should send feedback to have the damaged book transaction canceled and she should give you one credit. You should send the wrong book to its rightful owner when you get it.

I question the honesty of the sender since she is asking you to mark the unreceived damaged book received when you haven't received it, that said I'd request my credit for forwarding on the wrong book received to the other person.

For those who are suggesting that Trish let the book go lost in the mail, I'm not sure that will work well.  First, we don't know what the person who received Trish's damaged book did.  It that person marked it as damaged by USPS then I think that the sender still got a credit for it and the receiver of the damaged book still lost a credit.  If Trish receives the wrong book and doesn't mark it as received, then I think everything gets out of whack in terms of credits.  (It makes my head hurt to think about it). 

I think the sender is doing their level best to make this right for everyone, and if she sends Trish the 2 credits that really is the easiest way to handle it.

Two credits sounds fair--one refunded, one to cover postage for forwarding the other one.  We all mess up sometimes, I'd give her the benefit of the doubt.

Don't be discouraged. I got the wrong book on my first transaction too.  I was worried I had made a big mistake signing up for PBS.  The sender sent me a credit to cover the postage to send the book to the right person. That person sent me my book.  I even got it before the request went lost. Out of about 100 books, I've only had to mark 1 RWP and ask for a credit back.

Hi Trish

First of all, let me welcome you to the list. I'm sorry you are having such a problem with your first order. OK, this is going to sound weird, but I'm wondering if I'm the person who might have gotten your book, and you will be getting mine? I received my package yesterday. I ordered two books from her, and got one that was meant for me, and one that wasn't. I PMed her right away, and she got right back to me. Yes, she made a mistake...I have to admit that I have made a few myself...lol...I think that sooner or later it happens to the best of us.  But if it is the same person, she sounds like she wants to make it right. She has offered to send me my credits back also, but I asked her to only send one since I DID get one of the books. I'm thinking the mix-up might involve me because I asked her to contact the other person, and ask if they will send me my book, and I will send hers to her. I really want the book I ordered, so she said she would. Would you mind if I PMed you to get the information? If it is us, I would love to trade our books out. Please don't get too disappointed that there was a problem...things happen. And this is a great site!

Edited to add:

The book I requested was evidently damaged in the mail.    I have not received a book yet in the mail.

The book I received was not damaged, so maybe it's not me...but I'd like to make sure. If it is, your book is not damaged!

Thanks to all for the responses.    Patti, I wrote you with the name of the book via PM.       I have written the sender back and asked that she refund my credit for the book that was damaged in the mail, and that I will not receive.   I also asked that she send me a credit so I can send the wrong book received on to the other person who is waiting on it.  

The things that make me very uncomfortable about the whole situation are:

(1) when sender contacted me she did not seem concerned at all that the book she sent me turned up damaged in the mail, and did not initially offer a refund credit for the damaged book;

(2) I am being asked to say I received a book that I did not received (since it arrived at the other person's house in damaged state).

It is reassuring to hear from so many nice people here.    I am hoping this problem transaction is a one time thing.  (And I hope this is resolved soon.)

I think the person only offered you 1 credit at first because the proper way to handle the situation would have been to not mark anything received on your end (if you send the incorrect book on). This would cause the book to go lost in the system and your credit returned at that point. The credit she would give you would be for postage. She would only give you the second one if you did mark it received because that is the only way you'd end up out a credit. Even though the system does not get the info to track things (ie she has a book marked rec'd that never was rec'd), marking it as rec'd and having the credit returned is the quickest way to finish things. Sounds like she is trying to make it all right in the end. Sorry your first transaction was a messy one! They should be few and far between.

All is well ... sender transferred two credits to me for (1) book I was to receive that was damaged en route and (2) wrong book I received that I need to forward.   I will get that book on the way today and hopefully all will be happily resolved for everyone.

Whew!!

I'm glad things worked out for you Trish! And thank you for PMing me...alas...it was not you who got my book, and not me who got yours. Thank you for trying though. I'll keep my fingers crossed that whoever got mine will still send it to me. =D
