I have a little 5 lb. part Yorkie part Maltese rescue.  She is 10 and I have had her 5 years.    I am so careful with her, she is groomed once a month by a professional groomer, I brush her nightly and at rare times every other night.

Tonigt was was brushing her hair and there was all this brown gunk around one of her ears and it had a funny smell.  She hasn't been scratching her shaking her head at all.  I know it can be ear mites or an ear infection.  I panicked and put ear mite medicine in.  My question is can she wait till MOnday to go to the vet.   I read where either can harm hearing etc.   Our regular vet has no weekend hours as she works alone.  The other vet is so pricey and we just finished paying off a surgery on her and I was in the ER New Years Day and just got that bill. .  If she needs to go I will take her but if she is safe to wait, that would help finances.  I don't want to let those 2 days of waiting to harm her.

I feel awful I can't believe I didn't see this.  I don't know how long it takes for mites or infection to show the brown residue.  Any one know if she'd be safe to wait till Monday?  Thanks.

I think if it's ear mites, then probably.  One cat I had got them and they were hard to get rid of.  If it is an infection, then yes it could affect her hearing, and with a little dog like her, I would be afraid the infection would cause fever and spread in two days.  I know it's expensive, but I've taken them in on weekends mostly for my own piece of mind.  I'm a worry-wart.  You know her best...if she seems perfectly normal, other than the gook, wait until Monday.

My 12 lb shih tzu constantly has ear infections...the weekend is not going to do anything.  Do you happen to have any meds around?  If so, use it.  Try to clean the ear 1st.  But call 1st thing Monday morning.

Ear mites are uncommon in dogs- they're not the mite's preferred host. Cats are. Really the only time you'll see mites in a dog is if they've been around infected cats. Ear infections (yeast or bacterial) are much more common. I'd use some ear cleaner (from the petstore or whatever) and clean them as best you can and take her to the vet at your earliest convenience. Monday should be fine unless she's really going nuts and scratching herself raw or shaking her head a ton.
