I am looking for a short story, a librarain posted asking if anyone remembers this. I am absolutely postive that I read this years ago. Instead of wars, a group of soldiers go into an area from each country. Which ever side has the last living soldier wins and gets to control things for a period of time. The soldier who wins for his country can do anything he wants with no consequences. In the conflict in the story, one soldier is left for dead, and the battle goes on.  He recovers enough to get up and kill the last survivor from the other side and is declared the winner.  He jets around for awhile, drinking and partying. He goes home to his parents, and sees the daughter of the next door neighbor, goes over and rapes her. I don't remember how it ends, but I am sure that I read it awhile ago. It is not in Dangerous Visions, but I don't know if I have a copy of Dangerous Visions 2 around the house. Someone said they thought the name of the story was the Winner, but the only story with that titile that I have found is not the right story. Any bells?

Don't know if this will help, but you can see the list of the stories in Again, Dangerous Visions on Wikipedia at the following link:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Again,_Dangerous_Visions

Let us know if you find out what it is!

I paged through my copies of Again, Dangerous Visions 1 and 2 and didn't find it.  But it seems vaguely familiar - sure sounds like a Harlan Ellison plot.  Maybe it's one of his own stories.

I've got a friend and my dad who both have read a lot of Ellison and neither of them thinks that they have ever read it.  I'll keep trying to figure it out here.
