I have had hens and chicks for probably 25 years. I have never seen them bloom. When we moved in, I planted some in a succulent garden in the front of our yard. It now has a huge stalk and is about to bloom (despite the idiot cable guy sparying it with spray paint...) If we can keep the neighborhood rif raff from pulling it off, it should be spectacular. They pulled the bloom stalks off my Yuccas. :/ DH was PIZZED!

Sherry sent me hens and chicks back when we did the exchange. I liked them so much they are still in the house. Another friend gave me a handful that I just started out by the pool about 3 weeks ago. One of them has grown into a huge stalk and is almost ready to bloom. At our get together on the 4th, I had several people ask what the "penis plant" is. I swear, that's exactly what this one looks like!!! |

It's cool when they bloom, huh? I have two that are blooming right now. |

I didn't even know that they bloom, till one day, voila! I thought, what the heck IS THAT?! So my uncle said- well, they're hens, chicks, & cocks! I laughed my butt off. |

LOL - they do look like peni, but then it puts out multiple shoots and blossoms along the shoots. Mine's about spent, but if I can get a pic, I will... |

I'd like to see a pic too. I used to buy them at the flea market but DD probably put them some awful place. He brought some from his mom's and did the same thing. I'm beginning to be very fond of succulents; however with many of them, it's practically impossible to see how they really look from the catalog pictures - or how they'll behave. I suppose I shouldn't call them all succulents - I mean sedums and sempervivums and anything else like that that will survive the winter here. |
