A Hen Frigate was any ship with a captain's wife on board and this book is a largely untold story of the enterprising women who sailed the seas thoughout the 1800's. True stories of remarkable strong women facing unbelevable hardships. Photos and drawings help bring the stories to life.

very interesting book about womens lives aboard ship in 1700-1900's - it was very eye opening - the author clearly did extensive research - every story is told from letters written by the seafaring women themselves - tells all facets of their story from there home life in port to how they fare on board being the only woman to how their marriages survive under such harsh conditions to the way children are raised on board to medical care to food, shelter, shipwrecks, storms, foreign lands/ports/islands/natives etc... this book does not leave anything out - the author includes photos, drawings, maps - the only problem is the author sometimes uses words or phrases that are native to england/australia/new zealand in the kings english so to speak and it can be confusing but by reading the entire sentence/paragraph you can get the gist of what she is saying
i guess what i'm trying to stay is i really enjoyed this book - should be required reading in school - and i'm not a history freak this would have held my attention in school
