Another in Stasheff's WIZARD IN SPITE OF HIMSELF series, but involves the children of the Wizard more than the Wizard himself.
Horrible, vicious monsters start spewing out of a foggy maelstrom, attacking the people of Gramarye. Is this a natural occurence or enemy action? Whichever it is, those monsters have to go!
