Jordan has taken the threads from the lives of her characters and skillfully spun them into a truly beautiful, sensitive and memorable piece of work. Essentially the story revolves around the lives of two women, a mother (Liz) and her daughter (Sage), their experiences of hardships and turmoil, of great sacrifice, tragedy and rejection, and of course, wonderful (and sometimes forbidden) love. What I found most impressive was that Jordan so effectively and seemingly effortlessly moved through time. She not only presents the story of Liz and Sage in the present, but interweaves the story of Liz as a brave young women into this, a story painstakingly documented in Liz'z diaries. Jordan takes, not only these two women, but a host of other characters, and creates and develops lives and personalities so real, it feels as if they are actual people and not fictitious characters from a book. I enjoyed this book tremendously. I have read it several times, and still enjoy paging through it. The Hidden Years is a novel that I whole-heartedly reccommend.
