I just got my Kindle and am really enjoying it. Have one little question-I keep seeing passages in ebooks marked "55 highlights" etc. This is even on brand new books. What in the world is it?

You're seeing what parts other readers have highlighted. It's part of the 'shared' experience.

In the settings, you can turn it off. There's more info on this discussion... Here.

First thing I did was turn that all off, and I keep my wifi turned off as well. I'm not into sharing as I'm reading. lol.

Well that's what I thought it was when I was reading library books, but when I started reading books I had just bought from Amazon it was still there. Confusing!
