Amanda the main character develops and changes continuously in the book. She goes from a naive young girl to a mature woman. She also realizes that she's not the spoiled and immature girl that she once was. Nothing like a dose of reality in wartime! She's learned the benefit of hard work and holding to a strong and steady faith in God, despite her doubts at some hard times in her life.
The author clearly did research into the Civil war era. The events are very well-detailed. The reader will be able to picture some scenes from the great details the author gives into the time period.
What I liked about most the book:
-The history was well written
-Amanda was a relatable, yet, a flawed character that was likable.
-The well thought-out plot.
-The low key, yet solid faith of Amanda,, which was my favorite part of this book. Watching Amanda's faith grow amidst hard times.
-The revealing of the horrors of war and the personal effects it had on the characters.
What I didn't like about the book:
-The slow pacing of the plot.
-The lack of interaction between the main characters, Amanda and Kent.
-The lack of chemistry between Amanda and Kent.
-Due to the writing there were times where you couldn't get enough information to know where the characters stood on slavery or what makes them tick.
Overall, a 3.5 star read. While I did enjoy this book there were a few things I didn't like. Though, if you like a Christian based historical romance or Christian novel you will probably enjoy this book.
