Johnson is an Englishman, although he is rather admiring of the early colonists, there is quite a contrast between his version of American Colonial history and the "History of America" that I am listening to right now on the History channel. Lots of events (like details of the imposition of slavery, and Indian wars) that you don't hear about in a corporate-sponsored television series.
