Hi! I am curious to the purpose behind holding wishlisted books?

Do I lose my place in line if I hold? For instance, I want all the Harry Potter books, but I want them in order. If I put 2-7 on my wishlist but them hold them, what happens when I unhold them? Do I remain at my place in line when I held them? Or do I move up, but just not get the offers when its my FIFO time on hold?

(Is this too confusing)!?

I believe you still keep your place in line. Otherwise there'd be no reason to hold you could just delete them and reWL when ready.

I put some on hold because they are new to me authors and I already have some in my TBR. So I decided to hold other books until I read one from that author and decide if I want to get more.

The following changes were introduced on 10/6/2009:

  • New feature!  You can sort your Wish List by author (alphabetically by author's last name), title (alphabetically), date (date you added it to your Wish List, position (your position in the lines for the books) and estimate (our estimate of when you might be offered the book).
  • New feature! Putting your whole Wish List on hold:
    • To do this, you choose "check all" at the top of the list and then click "Hold checked"
      • this will preserve your "place in line" in the Wish List but your Wish will not be active
      • this hold will also make auto-requested wishes INACTIVE.
      • You can do this page by page or do the whole Wish List by checking the additional box that appears when you check the "check all" box
    • You may want to do this for example if you have no credits to accept Wish List books, but you still want your Bookshelf to be active
  • New feature! You can also put individual items on hold if you are not ready to accept those items when they are offered to you
    • to do this, check the box to the left of the item and click Hold Checked.
    • This will preserve your "place in line" for the book but make the wish INACTIVE
    • Note: items on hold still count toward the 200-item limit on the Wish List.
  • New feature!   Default auto-request option
    • You can now set the default at the top of the Wish List to choose auto-request for your future wishes - if you check this box, it will not affect any existing Wishes on your list, but all Wishes added while the box is checked will be set to auto-request by default.
    • Unchecking the box will not affect the settings on any items already on your list, but all wishes added to your list while the box is UNchecked will be added with the 48-hour offer option (NOT set to auto-request).
  • New feature!  Auto-request options are now color-coded for at-a-glance list management
    • Items set to auto-request will be green
    • Items on hold will be red
    • Items not on hold and not set to auto-request will have no color applied.
    • If you put an auto-request item on hold, it will turn red.

I wish they had this option when I was getting ready to move cross country. I would have loved to hold the WL (less books to move) and still be able to take shelf orders.  I ended up bringing most of my posted books to the UBS and thrift store.

I put a hold on two wishlisted books I'm receiving from swaps.  Don't want to remove them until actually recieved, but don't want to be offered the book  either...the new feature allows me to hold my spot until the swap book arrives, JIC

ETA - If I look on a friends wishlist, would I be able to tell which (if any) books she has on hold?  Does it remove the "post this book to a friend" option?

PS:  quick look at Mary's wishlist.  If she still has some on hold, I couldn't tell the difference.  Mary, are you aware that the ISBN you have wishlisted for Queen of Song and Souls is incorrect?  There's 177 members wishing and it's a short ISBN, and unlikely to be posted into FIFO under that incorrect number.  The correct ISBN should be 0843960604  - Queen of Song and Souls (Tairen Soul, Bk 4) :: C. L. Wilson

Oh I didn't notice that.  I will probably buy it new anyway.

I have about 5 books on hold.  They may still show up on my WL when you look. But I bet it wouldn't let you post them right to me.

Actually when I click on the Wish List button under my name to see my WL the way other see it: the hold books do not show up.  But they do show up when I go under the Wish List that only I can see and edit.

OK off to fix that Queen of Song and Souls book

ETA: I just stole Denise's idea and put a book I won in a game on hold. I didn't think to do that.  I'm so far down on the list it probably wouldn't matter.  But just incase I put it on hold and now if it goes lost I don't have to start 50 paces back and however many it grows in the mean time.  I put a note on the book with the name of the swap I won it from.

one more question (probly a dumb one). Do you keep moving up in line, or are you frozen in your spot in line until you unhold? It would be really nice to just keep moving up.

Denise, that is brilliant - I don't know why I didn't think of that, but that's a perfect use for the individual WL hold feature.  {{running off to hold certain swap books}}

I think the answer to this is that you keep moving up. My interpretation of the "hold your place in line" is that you will stay between the same two people. The date and time stamp is how the WL is lined up and since that won't change, then as the line moves, you should move with it. That is my interpretation of it, I have not gotten an affimative on that yet. I put a note on some of the books I put on hold and am going to watch them to see if, when the line moves, my spot remains in the line or in that # slot.
