Question for those of you who have read and liked the Hollows series by Kim Harrison - how does the first book compare with the rest of the series?  I'm about half way through Dead Witch Walking and I'm not sure I'm that into this book or this series.  I know lots of others are fans - so I'm just curious how the first book compares to other books in the series for you, in an effort to decide whether to continue with book 2.  Thanks!

I personally liked the series, but for me the books really picked up after the first one.  The first one (if I remember correctly) was more character development and giving you some backstory.  Once you know who all the main players are, the rest of the books are great.

I actually read book 2 first and then went back and read book 1.  IMO books 2 and 3 are the best of the series.   Book 7 is the weakest for me.  I do like the series, though I nearly stopped reading after book 5.  I'm glad after the latest one that I hung around.

I'm hoping to find out here also.  I have the first book, I have it for the challenge and also because I want to check out the series.  I have stopped reading it about 1/4 of the way as I can't get into it, but mainly because I felt pressured to read it and finish it in a hurry.

I know some series can take the second or even third book to really get an idea of how good it will be so I am wondering if this could be one of such series.

Looking forward to reading what others have to say about it.

I found the 1st book to be tough to get thru but I've liked/loved the rest of the series.... I have the latest one here right now!

I had a harder time with the first one as well. I liked it, but it took me awhile to get through.  I do think it is one that gets better as you go and become more attached to the characters.  Although there are times I just want to reach through and smack someone :-)

I'm in the same boat as far as the first book taking some time to get through.  I enjoyed the first two books well enough but the 3rd book blew me away!  It was awesome, I couldn't put it down!  I think it's worth hanging in there with the series, as long as you are enjoying the first book somewhat.  It does get better and better.

I am in the middle of the 2nd one in this series and I have to say I only started it because it seems like everyone thinks this is a great series.  Now that I am in the 2nd book I am enjoying it more.  I figured it had to be a good series with all of the people that love it.

It is my favorite series. For me, they keep getting better and better. I got a bit annoyed with Rachel/Ivy for awhile, but that has calmed down and things have continued to go in a favorable direction. I loved these books so much that I started buying them in hardcover, and then replacing my paperbacks with hardcovers.

Someone please tell me that Rachel gets her head on straight and starts using her brain!

I can't believe, being a bounty hunter, she didn't know all the things she shouldn't do.  Think backwards!  What were the dumb things that let her catch the ones she was after?

Read a book on public transit, when there was a price on her head!

Close your eyes!

Bend your head back!

That lets anyone sneaks up on her, she doesn't see them.

Go to a building that others will expect you to go to, wearing a disguise that is known to them!

Don't pay attention when outside in the yard picking plants.

Don't learn from your first stupid mistake, get on public transit and read a book again!

Close your eyes and bend your head back! Again!

I am only one/third way through the book and I am wishing someone would shoot her, she deserves it!

I will finish it and read the second one, as everyone says it is worth it, but if she doesn't start to use her brain, the writer keeps her being an idiot, I doubt that I can continue to read the series.

I am definitely going to read the second one, based on this, and since I have it.  I have read a couple of series lately where the first book takes a while to get into but the rest of the series is great - so I'm willing to give it more than one book to get going, but I kind of like to know where I'm headed if the first book wasn't great.  Thanks for sharing all your thoughts!

Janette I love you comment about Rachel getting her head straight. I won't to shake her most of the time and tell her to smarten up. I think that is why Kim Harrison has a strong cast around her. She would have been killed by now if she had to survive on her own.
