Mr. Waldie is frequently called upon in matters of local history and geography in Southern California and generously thanks the people and the grant that helped him finish this manuscript. I find the book a pleasant read, very easy to read, and quite self indulgent. This is okay in that it is literature (I myself would have preferred more history). Rather than chapters there are numbered sections of varying lengths, never as much as a page (total 316). It is centered on his hometown of Lakewood, California, where in the 1950s and 1960s there were decent jobs and affordable housing, good schools, fine weather, civic minded neighbors, etc.
There are no notes, no bibliography, and no index.
