This is the second book in a series by Allen Mallinson about cornet, then lieutenant, now Captain Matthew Hervey of the Sixth Light Dragoons.

Hervey is promoted due to his actions at Waterloo, but a series of mishaps initially convinces him he has angered the army he serves. Getting promoted delights him, but also causes problems. Now, instead of just being a few hundred miles from the woman he loves and wishes to marry, he is sent thousands of miles and a year or more away.

His adventures in India in 1817 are just as, if not more, interesting than those he encountered at Waterloo, as this time he is in command of an "army" and gives orders instead of just following them. He makes more friends than enemies in this volume and learns much more about himself.

I look forward to his next adventure.
