As I read this I was reminded of the works of Tennessee Williams. This book features a truly disfunctional family that squanders its'considerable wealth and descends into poverty during the great depression. The mother is a true southern harpy who is a control freak who begs to be ignored by her family. She has 4 worthless, prolifigate sons and a daughter whose life she controls. Everyone in the family is a "taker" except the daughter who is a selfless "giver" and is the support system for the rest of her family, who fail to appreciate anything she does. I was struck by the idleness of the family members as they depended on their servants to take care of every need. No one in the whole family can claim any life accomplishments. The heroine spends her life giving to her family, sewing, reading, playing cards, drinking tea and coffee and taking care of the dying. Genny Sikes
