Hope Valley War is a terrific book! Brock Thoene has written a gripping western of good versus evil that captures you in the first chapter and holds you fast to the end. The story is set in the 1850s in the Utah territory where justice is a sometime thing and vigilantes' taste for terror and revenge takes the place of law.
The main character, John Thornton, tells this action-packed account from his own perspective in understated, almost humorous tones. The book opens with the nighttime raid and murder of John's brother Lucky, who leaves a young son, a younger brother Kit, and his wife Maria.

Several months later, Maria's letter telling John of their calamity finally reaches him and, after nine years of drifting, trying to forget how much he loved Maria, John immediately sets out for Hope Valley.
