If you like your historical romance heavy on the historical than this one's for you. I personally was too irritated with the heroine to LOVE this book- but it is written well. I felt the author threw too much trauma at Caroline, having her constantly holding the hero at a distance. Understandable, but it just got old.

Overall, I found this book to be well researched and well written. What I particularly enjoyed were all the details of life at the time that the author was able to throw into the narrative. I never would have considered how the Native Americans made it through the winter if Lyon had not put it in her novel.
Sadly, the characters, in my mind, had no chemistry. But, the were written with such depth that the lack of spark did not hurt the story. Also, there were so many other lesser characters that rounded out the book that, for me, this should not be a romance novel. I would have been just find reading a fictional story without all the cliches of romance the author dropped in.
My one other complaint is that Lyon jumps from scene to scene too quickly. I wish she had spent more time developing each scene as one whole chapter instead of chopping each scene up into little vignettes.

Caroline's family was killed by Kiowa Indian as they traveled west in a wagon train. She was raped and tortured held captive by White Bear. He beat her all the time until Little Wolf, chief of the northern Cheyenne bought her to be his wife. He didn't share his furs with her, he had two wives already. His wives helped heal her, saving her life.
Caroline was returned to her uncle but the town treated her like a whore since she had been Little Wolf's wife. She sold her half of the store to her uncle loaded all kinds of supplies up to take to the Cheyenne Indian when she heard they were planning to move north.
Zach MacAlister's wife was murdered by Indian and his son taken captive. He agrees to guide Caroline to the Indians, he doesn't tell her why he is helping her or that he is a Major in the army looking for his missing son.
