I have a young teen who reads at a high level and loves animal (especially horse) stories!  Most of the books that I have been able to find are too young for her.  Can you give me any suggestions?

The Canterwood Crest series is YA and at least takes place at stables. I've not read the books.

I think this is the first book:

These are the only ones I can think of right now.

my daughter reads Canterwood Crest as well- but she is 11 and not an advanced reader.  Can't find any other horse series for her which is all she wants to read!

How about adult fantasy?  Kristen Britian's Green Rider series comes to mind.  Starts with Green Rider.  I have not read the whole series.  But it starts pretty clean cut.

I would also recommend James Herriot, the English vet.  I loved his books when I was in 6th grade.

At that age, I also read Watership Down by Richard Adams.

How about going back to some of the older books? These are some of the ones I read back in the late 70s, early 80s some of which had been my mother's before they were mine.

Trixie Belden series (from the 50s)

Linda Craig series (from the 80s)

Black Stallion series (from the 70s)

Maurgarite Henry books (from the 60s and 70s)

Maureen O'Hara's My Friend Flicka and the other two books in the series

anything by Dorothy Lyons (Silver Birch, Copper Kahn, Golden Sovereign to name a few) (from the 50s)

Scarlet Royal is a good horse story combined with teen romance (from the 50s)

The Lady by Anne McCaffrey (from the early 90s I believe) (this is an adult reading level)

one I really remember enjoying was Afraid to Ride by CW Anderson (from the 50s)

there are a LOT of books out there about kids growing up on horse ranches, from the 60s and 70s

Jean Slaughter Doty - The Monday Horses was particularly good, so was Can I Get There by Candlelight

The Little White Horse by Ellzabeth Goudge (40s)

animals other than horses - Quest for the Faradawn by Richard Ford

She might like Susan Wittig Albert's Beatrix Potter Cottage Mysteries which is a fairly new series with 6 books so far

Horse fiction for kids doesn't seem to have anywhere near the popularity today that it did 30 years ago or more...
