This is a very well written book. Nell has been a very sheltered girl all her life. The year she turns 17 her family is visited by cousins fron back east and when the older male cousin begins to flirt wit her and touch her behind the backs of the others she is flattered. The fact that he is hiding it from the others seems to add to the provocativeness of what is happening. Then just before the visitors leave he goes much further and she does not realize what has happened. Nell is innocent but when finds she is pregnant then her mother and stepfather must be told. Her stepfather puts her in a poorhouse where he is on the board of governors with the understanding that the child will be adopted by others. But when the little girl is born and Nell must nurse it until it can be weaned she wants to keep it. Then a mueder is discovered to have happened at the farm and Nell finds out the murderer is her stepfather. This book iMovies at a fast pace, the details bring the reader right into the setting, and keeps the reader guessing. I really must read the next two books to see where Nell goes with her life as an independent, intelligent lady at a time when women are expected to be dependent on the men in their lives.
