This novel was dry, difficult to read (staying focused-wise), and just not as interesting as it could have been. I suppose this is because nowadays a madman is portrayed with much more vigor and craziness - something this novel lacked. I think Hawthorne was simply trying to stick to an even, informative tone throughout the book. I wouldn't recommend this one.
