Hey, all!   I am a new owner of a Nook and would like to add some screensavers and/or wallpapers onto my Nook from Nook-Looks (I think).  I am challenged when it comes to computer stuff like that.  So, if there is any patient people who can help me figure this out, I would greatly appreciate it.

I saw a few that I liked at that site, and I downloaded one, but it's sitting in my HP photo program and I don't know what to do next.  On that site, it says to change the size  stuff and I'm lost.

I am sure it is so easy, you are all laughing at me......but I need help..I'll be checking back throughout the evening.  Thanks fo any help you can offer.

Donna

I don't have a Nook, so can't help much, but there's a forum at Mobile Read on Nooks. There's a sticky thread at the top called "Tips for Displaying Sideloaded Book Covers" Here.

If no one can help here, maybe you can ask there?

Nobody's laughing, believe me, and least of all me.

There's a good tutorial on YouTube if you're a visual person: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeVaBV5XPpo

But here's how.

  1. First, right-click your desktop and make a folder you can call "Nook Wallpaper". It just gives you a place to store the pictures. You can call it "Charlie" or whatever you want. Mine is "Nook Wallpaper".
  2. Get your picture -- I see it's already in your HP photo program, so you're way ahead of the game here. Good for you! I use Microsoft Office Picture Manager, but I'll bet they're very similar.
  3. Resize your picture so it's 600 pixels wide by 760 pixels tall. That way no thick black lines (due to the resizing) will appear with the picture on your Home page. Many instructions will tell you 600 wide by 800 tall but most people find that leaves black lines. So try 600 by 760 first.
  4. Then there should be some kind of button in the HP program that controls color and black and white. On mine it's under Color Enhancement, Saturation. You'll find it, it's there somewhere. Click it so the photo is black and white. Apparently this isn't 100% necessary but people think the wallpaper looks less muddy and more clear if it's in B/W -- we've only got 16 shades to work with here, so we need all the help we can get.
  5. Like it? Do a Save As, and put it into the folder you created and called Nook Wallpaper or Charlie.
  6. Now: we're almost to the end. Get a drink of water. Deep breath. You're about to amaze yourself.
  7. Plug your Nook into your computer and let the folders open in whatever way your operating system likes to do that. You'll see a folder called "my wallpaper" Open that folder. Right now there's nothing in it, probably. That's OK, You're about to change that.
  8. Select the picture that you want in your Nook Wallpaper folder on your desktop. You can copy and paste it, or you can just drag it and drop it, into your "my wallpaper" folder in the Nook.
  9. Ta-da!
  10. Now. Close the Nook folder on the computer.
  11. Unplug/eject your Nook from the computer. Do it the way your computer says to.
  12. On your Nook, go to the Home screen.
  13. All the way to the right, there's the Settings folder. Tap it.
  14. Tap Display.
  15. Tap Wallpaper. You'll see a list of available wallpaper, and the one you just created should be on the list. Tap it.
  16. Go back Home. You should see your wallpaper.
  17. Go eat some chocolate and do a Snoopy dance. You deserve it!

I hope this helps.

Marilyn,

The photo is actually in the Windows Photo Gallery.  I created a folder on my desktop.  How do I resize the photo?  I've never done that.

Look under Edit and you'll find Resize and also Effects -- the one on the left is B/W.

I've never used that program before. It doesn't give you a lot of sizing options. I ended up choosing Custom and then maximum 760.

ETA: I'm wondering if you're going to get the black bars since it can't be sized according to the instructions.

Does anyone know if there's another program she can use if she doesn't have a photo editing program?

Sorry, Marilyn.  Now I feel like I am being a pest.  I tried to find how to resize.  Where my photo is, the only place I can see to resize is by opening Paint.  When I click on resize, it's asking me for a percentage between 1 and 500.  Not pixels.  I'm going to check out the you tube video.

Thanks

Donna, I'm sorry, I wish I could help you. I guess we don't have anything like the same programs on our computers, and unfortunately, I only know what I'm familiar with.

If nothing else, you can download Picasa - it's free - and resize your pictures in that.

I found a free editing program & was able to resize the photo.  Now I am going to go through the rest of the steps & see what happens.

Marilyn, on a side note, I don't post often but I check the forums everyday.  When I was trying to decide if an e-reader was right for me, I read all the threads I could find. Your posts, in particular, I found very interesting & informative.  Basically, you really helped me decide.  So thank you for helping me now and thank you for your posts.

I'll let you know how I made out.

Please do. I think when you've done it once, you'll have a ball with it, adding screensavers of all your favorite photos. Good luck!

Oh, and I'm glad you found all the information we've inundated people with useful. Nobody's shy about their opinion around here. :-)

Ok....I did everything on the list.  But it's not showing up on my Nook.  It's in the folders on my nook, but I can't find it  in settings.  UGGHH....

You've scrolled all the way up and down?

When I added mine when I was walking through the instructions up above, the one I added was the very last one as I scrolled down.

There is no bar to scroll.  It still just has the ones that the Nook came with.   I am going to try again over the weekend.  Again, thanks for all your help.  I'll check in over the weekend and let you know how I make out.

Oh, I'm so glad! You're golden now! I'm doing a little Snoopy dance, too!

You have a good night, too, Donna!

PS: You scroll up and down on the touchpad with your finger -- no scroll bars. Sometimes I have trouble seeing of the menu because I haven't scrolled up or down far enough to see all the choices.
