I'm sure there is information about this somewhere but I thought someone might know. I requested 3 books from the same person on the 26th and it still says waiting for member. How many days will it say that before it'll kick the request out and give me my credits back? Or will it ever? I thought it was 48 hours but it seems as if it's not.

I believe it takes five days. If there are other members offering the same books, it will roll over to another member. Unfortunately, if that member doesn't respond, it will take another 5 days to roll over again.

I know it's hard, but you really need to let the system work! If you let the request time out, it will flag the non-responding member's account. If you cancel the request, then request the same book again, it will probably go to back to the same non-responding member and you'll have to star the 5 day waiting period over.

yes, Denise is correct.  The member has 5 days to respond before it rolls over to the next person(s) in the FIFO line.  If you cancel the request before allowing the system to time out and then request the books again you will go to the same person that you had cancelled the request from because they are still first in line.  Also, if for some reason they waited til the end of those 5 days to accept it and then told the system they'd mail it in 2 days it will continue saying "waiting on member" until they mark it mailed so, it could actually say that for more than the 5 days because there is also the grace period they have to mark it mailed.

It is best to let the system work....

I'm in my second round of "waiting for member" for a book I originally requested on February 20th.  It took 6 days for that request to time out.  Now I'm on my fifth day of the waiting for the second person to respond to my request.  Unless she responds in the next few hours, tonight at midnight should mark the 6th day and that request will time out, too!  It was just my bad luck to get two people back to back who obviously signed up for PBS and then forgot about it or don't understand how it works.  In both cases the book was listed way back last April 2007.  I liked someones suggestion on another discussion thread about putting people's accounts on vacation hold if they have not logged on in three months.  If they haven't, but don't want to be on hold, they would just need to respond to an e-mail that their account will be going on hold unless they log on.  And if they don't respond, because they have a family emergency or something, the vacation hold would prevent any requests from getting dumped from their list.  I think it would be a win-win all the way around!

Actually it is 5 full days, the first partial day doesn't count, and the time out time, is Eastern time.

I like the email idea too, Stephanie, that would eliminate some!

As an update to my post above, I'm now at day 4 1/2 on my THIRD "waiting for member".  I'm glad this isnt' a book I was really anxious to have sent!  It's been almost half a month since I made the initial request and I still don't know when the book will even be mailed.  My first book took almost six days to expire since I requested it just after midnight Pacific time.  When PBS cancelled that book at 3:01am on the sixth day, that re-set the clock and the second book was cancelled by PBS at the end of the fifth day at 3:01am Eastern Time.  I'm guessing if the member that I'm currently waiting on doesn't respond by midnight tonight, I'll be moved on to the fourth member!

The book is Slow Burn by Juile Garwood.  Plenty of them in the system, so I'll eventually get a copy.  I'm reading the Kay Scarpella seiries by Patricia Cornwell right now, so I'm not in a rush for the book.  At least it's helping weed out inactive members, though I don't know how quickly.  I noticed that the first person who timed out has six books listed on her shelf and they were all posted on 4/1/2007.  The second person who timed out has nine books left on her shelf and they were all posted on 4/5/07.  Both shelves still appear to be active.  I've started another thread about placing members on vacation hold if they appear to be inactive or momentarily unresponsive.  Here's that thread: Waiting on Member/Inactive Members -Placing Member on Vacation Hold
