I just placed my account on hold due to a serious house fire on June 9th. Everyone ( all family members and pets ) are safe but I can't say the same for the computer and/or books . We are not able to live in the house at this time and I am only able to use the computer at the public library. I wanted to let R&R know why I didn't respond to the requests and wishlisted books ( one of them I REALLY wanted and now I am #38 ) on my account. I am not being negligent. It has been a very traumatic time and I just can't seem to remember how to contact them. Can someone help me? Or do you think I should even bother them? I won't be able to read the responses since I am getting ready to leave the library now and probably won't be able to return until Friday but I would appreciate any advice thrown my way. Thanks. |

Thank You all for your kind thoughts and especially to Kim for sending the info to Richard and Co. This is my first time back to the library since I first posted about the fire. Oh my God what a mess!!!!! I have lost alot of "stuff" and I know its just stuff and can easily be replaced but it is still very traumatic to see all the damage. I cannot believe all the books I have lost. Many of my TBR books are damaged beyond readability let alone tradeabililty. Makes me very sad since I was anxiously looking forward to the summer and my chance to have lots of reading time. I cannot believe all that is involved in cleaning up after water and fire damage. I really had no idea. Hopefully in a week or so I will be somewhat settled ( in a rental of some sort ) and may receive my computer back. Then I will be able to join the group again on a regular basis. I am keeping my account on hold but have a few books on automatic request. That's about as involved as I can be for the time being. Hope everybody else is doing well and I will try to check in again on the weekend. |

I'm back! Even if it is only for a brief moment at the library again. Well, the house is almost all packed out now. The girls working for the pack-out/cleaning company cannot believe how many books I owned. I was lucky to have been able to save many that were in the bookcases in the loft area. However, I also lost MANY, MANY other books. The girls do a lose inventory that will be submitted to the insurance company. They said they usually just count and turn it in that way ( 50 hardbacks, 23 paperbacks, etc ) but they realized how devastated I was by losing the books so they actually entered the title and author of each book into the computer. They gave me a print out with all this information. I thought that was very thoughtful on their part. They didn't have to take the extra time to do that. Actually, I have found many very nice people helping to support me through this difficult time and many of them are here at PBS. A great big thank you to all of you! |

Mona, I'm sorry to hear about the fire, but glad that everyone is OK. If there is anything you need us PBS members to send you, please don't hesitate to post a "Wish List" for us. |

I cannot ask PBS members for anything. They have been more than kind all on their own. I even received a mysterious wishlisted book in the mail the other day. All the kind gestures by friends here at PBS have truly touched by soul.
Just a few words on the fire itself. It happenned in the afternoon on the day that my son was to graduate from high school. Without going into details, it destroyed the entire upstairs area which included all and I repeat, all of my clothes. It was very important that I see my son graduate and my daughter and myself were able to attend the ceremony, despite what we might have looked or smelled like. The smoke alarm went off and everyone was able to evacuate safely and the firemen rescued my two cats. That's what really matters. The rest of it is just "stuff". At least thats what I keep telling myself. |
