How do I upload book covers to get rid of those pesky blue covers? It makes it so much more interesting showing their covers.

How do I print the names of books in blue so that they go to their PBS description page? I love it when I can click on them and go directly to their page. I've always wondered how to do that.

Thanks ahead.

To upload book covers:

Method 1: go to the page of a book with a missing cover. underneath the blue "Cover n/a" icon there is a button for upload. follow instructions from there. As far as I know, the file has to be on your computer, not a link to an image on another website.

Method 2: bottom of every page, left hand column: "Member tools" under "My account." there is a link to Upload book covers.

Good to know: it's not instant; requires approval by Book Cover team. Not sure if there is a difference between the two methods.

Hi Connie! I upload book covers all the time, I hate seeing plain blue boxes on my bookshelf!

Here's a Help Docs that gives detailed instructions:

If the book cover image on a listing in the database is wrong...    <--- this applies to blank cover images as well as wrong ones.

(Sorry, took me forever to get the link to work right)

Connie, you need to have the image saved on your computer.  I use a free downloard called IrfanView.  Very easy to use it to save the image and fix it too.

The best size to have all three images show up is about 300 x 500 pixels.  Once you have an image that looks nice to you - not blurry, readable you submit it as the folks above suggest.  Oh, and some need cropping too.  No white around the edges please.  You submit either though Member Tools - Upload Book Cover Image or on the edit book page at the top where it says Upload New Cover.  If you use that you can just submit the image and not submit an edit.

Either way the image goes to the image approver queue - like the data edits.  Images can take as long as two weeks to show up on your page.  I just had one show up yesterday that I submitted on February 14.  I think all the things that have been happening delayed things a bit.  Normally is you have a blue image it just takes a day or two to replace the image.

I'll try to help if you pm.

Here is a topic that not only gives tips and help on images, but also on editing data for the books while you are at it.

Want to help with Data & Images? Find help here

Books move much better if you have covers and a description. Someone once asked how that was really effective if most books are ordered thru the FIFO system. Well, the places it matters, are 1) if you are a forum poster, other forum readers will often check out the shelves of other forum posters, since the seem to feel that they may be more reliable. 2) If someone orders a book from you thru the FIFO, there's the button to ORDER MORE FROM THIS MEMBER, and a lot of people order that, because there's a great possibility that if the person has one book you like, they just might have others too. But, if they get there and the book that they might have ordered because it is really similar or maybe even connected to the book they ordered has no cover and no description, how are they to know it is related? Good reason to have those covers and descriptions.

Connie, you can always ask someone on the imaging team if you need help with cropping or fixing an image.

Fantastic Fiction, FictionDB and Amazon  are my favorites sites for pulling images.

Here is a tip to remove the arrow from the Amazon images and also enlarge the image.  It comes from Betsy who is a Co-Coordinator for Image Team and this is where you can find it in this thread...

Looking for Volunteers-part-time, occasional, once in a while however much

"Here's some really helpful info on image editing from Betsy B., one of the Image Team Coordinators.   When the image you want is on Amazon and has that Amazon emblem  "Look Inside" Arrow, here's how to capture the image without that emblem:

I will use 0375709223 as the example.

If you go to Amazon.com and enter the ISBN, the image is there, but includes the "look inside" arrow.

Step 1. Open Word, note pad or email. You will need somewhere to work to complete the process.

Step 2.  On the book page in Amazon, right click on image in the upper left hand corner, select view image.  A new page will appear.

Step 3. Right click on the new image and select "Copy Image Location".

Step 4. Go to Word, note pad or email, right click and select paste.

Step 5. You will see this "http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41REJVC56TL._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA240_SH20_OU01_.jpg".  (Nothing will be in red- done for example)

Step 6.  Hightlight and remove the section in bold red.

Step 7. You will be left with this "http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41REJVC56TL._BO2,204,203,200_.jpg".

Step 8. Copy this and paste in the Address bar of your browser and hit enter. This will bring up the image in its largest form and without the "look inside" arrow.

Step 9. Right click and save image. Upload to Paperbackswap.

Thanks for that, Betsy!"

Connie-- it is addicting
