How to Sell is that rare book where I hope the authors insider experience has been exaggerated. Clancy Martins own life seems similar to protagonist Bobby Clarks trajectory. Bobby drops out of high school in Calgary and moves to Dallas/Fort Worth to work with his brother Jim, selling jewelry in a less than reputable jewelry emporium. Part One reads as a coming-of-age in a frenzied high-stakes world of cash, luxury goods, and drugs. Martin went on to become a professor and chair of philosophy at the University of Missouri-Kansas City; a philosophical bent is palpable, especially through Part Two, when Bobby and Jim are partners in their own enterprise and Bobbys relationships start to falter. I enjoyed this well-written book about salesmanship, brotherhood, and being not entirely at ease with ones precarious situation.
