Every generation produces a war. Few combatants have t h e i r hearts in, or stomach f o r , t h e job of k i l l i n g they are sugposed t o do. Civilians equip themselves against slaughtering from the a i r . Mans ingenuity has created more powerful planes, larger guns that can project shells over t r e - mendous distances, repeating r i f l e s , horrible bombs and mines. The same ingenuity creates defenses of s t e e l and concrete. A t the root of it a l l is his fear. He fears h i s fellow man --fears his motives, fears his power. Each i n t u r n f e a r s the other. Why Because l i n e s of comunication between men have not been established --by and large, man is own. And we, like the people of a l l ages, f e a r the unknown and guard ourse lve s against it. Threats t o our security take many forms i n todays complex world. Indeed, the more power we develop, the more insecurity we produce for each other because we have not included in our older concepts of morality the newer demands that our possession of power makes. The heritage of more power, more speed, more material possessions, only adds t o our responsibility i n accounting for our stewardship intermsof human values. One very encouraging aspect of the modern scene is that t h i s feeling of moral stewardship i s emerging, slowly, spottily, but steadily.
