Even though this book was directed toward a younger crowd, I believe anyone who loves horses would enjoy this book.

From inside the dustcover:

"They called her Hummer because she did. All the time. Well at least whenever she was thinking of horses, which is pretty close to saying all the time."

The morning Hummer wakes to find a beautiful, black Arabian mare outside, she's sure it's meant for her. Summoned by the bower of her desires and her dreams, this horse will fix all that's wrong in Hummer's life.

When Old Man Riley shows up to take his runaway horse home, Hummer's fantasy is shattered. But there is something about this pale, skinny girl - a toughness and determination - that impresses and touches Riley. He also senses something askew in Hummer's home. He's known her parents, Leona and Virgil, for a long time, but things don't seem quite what they ought to be. He decides to leave Fox with Hummer after all, sort of a loan.

In the days that follow, the time that Hummer spends with Riley and Fox works a different kind of magic in the young girl's life, until the day that Hummer's world and home almost fall apart.

Linda Gruenberg's first novel is a powerful witness to the potentially healing influence people have on each other's lives.
