A very enjoyable historical fiction story. African culture, the persecution of Jews in Portugal and slavery in America are all addressed in an interesting manner that isn't too preachy. There is a tie to the author's previous book, "The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon", but you don't need to have read it to enjoy this story. Highly recommended.
