A very different book for Trevanian and a complete wonderful and intense surprise by this international writer. Called in to solve MI5-KGB mysteries in real life, Trevanian here sets his story in the American West and weaves an incredible journey of setting and character itself set against our own preconceptions of the mythical west. You drop yours soon as he places you right there in his message of human pathos and transcendence. Easily enough one of the best "westerns" and short novels in the language I have ever read.

Nothing like the Eiger Sanction or his others, but an interesting read.

"You can't help thinking of Hannibal Lecter at the start of Trevanian's new novel...The story holds your attention completely...a blend of classic revenge tale, nostalgia, and parody." -- NEW YORK TIMES
