Sorry. The single word was written on the mirror. In front of it hung the body of Andy Fallon, a Minneapolis Internal Affairs cop. Was it suicide? Or a kinky act turned tragic accident? Together with his partner, the wisecracking, ambitious Nikki Liska, Sam Kovac digs at the too-neat edges of Fallon's death, uncovering one motive and one suspect after another. The shadows of suspicion fall not only on the city's power elite, but into the very heart of the police department. Unfortunately, neither Kovac nor Liska believes Fallon died by his own hand - accidentally or otherwise. As the case unfolds, it seems more and more likely that his death is somehow tied to his work. The question is whether he was killed for a case two months old - the murder of a gay patrol officer - or a case twenty years closed - the one that made Fallon's father a paraplegic. As Kovac and Liska dig deeper, they find their careers and lives on the line, because a killer wants the truth left dead and burried. Ashes to Ashes. Dust to Dust.

  14. "A MATCH FOR MIKE" by Jason T. Caffney with Ed Gaffney (California Comedy #2) (A+++++) Attorney Mike Davis has just about everything he's ever wanted - a great job and a beautiful condo in LA. Basically, he's all set - except for the fact that romance disappeared from his life some years ago and hasn't been heard from since,. So when a work assignment brings him to the mountain resort town of Dancing Elk, the home of his estranged childhood crush, Mike expects his nonexistent love-life to go from bad to awkward mess. Handyman and amateur photographer Jeremy Scholfield grew up in sleepy Dancing Elk and got used to being left behind when vacations ended and the visiting families went back home., As a child, Jeremy lived for the long, lazy summer days when his best friend Mike was in town. Mike was his match in many ways - he'd even learned sign language to community with Jeremy, who is deaf. But the year they turned seventeen, both Jeremy and Mike fell under the spell of the same boy and, at the end of that summer, when Mike left, he left for good. But now Mike's back, and he surprises Jeremy by asking for his help in repairing an important client's estate. And since Ryder's guardian is the gorgeous new Mustang Creek resort manager, Grace Emery, Slater figures it can't hurt to keep a closer eye on her, as well. Grace Emery doesn't have time for romance. Between settling into her new job and caring for her ex-husband's rebellious son, her attraction to larger-than-life Slater is a distraction she can't afford. 17. "TAKE ME ALL THE WAY" by Toni Blake (Coral Cove # 3) (A+++++) You can't go too far when you're fighting for love. Tamra Day swore off men a long time ago. Her art, her friends and her garden have always been enough...until now. Suddenly, Tamra is aching for a connection. Unfortunately, Coral Cove's most eligible bachelor is the troublemaker who's building the mini-golf course she's designing. Brusque and sarcastic, he's made a habit of annoying Tamra. But more infuriating is the fact that Tamra can't help noticing how sexy he is. They call him a war hero, but Jeremy Sheridan knows better. Still haunted by painful memories from Afghanistan, he's hoping for a new start. So far, the only problem is his new boss, Tamra, a control freak who's easy on the eyes - and way too fun to tease. Despite their differences, Tamra and Jeremy aren't as alone as they think they are. And together, with a little Coral Cove magic, they'll discover how good it feels to embrace a bright new future.
  18. "DOGWOOD HILL" by Sherryl Woods (Chesapeake Shores #12) (A++++++) When former pro football quarterback Aiden Mitchell comes to Chesapeake Shores to take a high school coaching job, he's embraced by the town - especially the O'Briens. 19. "STARLIGHT ON WILLOW LAKE" by Susan Wiggs (Lakeshore Chronicles #11) (A++++++) Faith McCallum is determined to rebuild her shattered life and give her two daughters a chance at a better future. Tina, How was Paint it Black?  I have a TBR copy for several years now. Should I pick it up?  Was it as good as White Oleander?

I am re-reading due to stressful month.  I am working thru a series by Chris Knopf that strats with The Last Refuge.  I bought them all in Large Print and find the easy read soothing.

Next I am going to start on a re-read of Shogum.   We just watched the series on CD and it made me remember what I loved about the book.

Finished this month: Spanish Dagger by Susan Wittig Albert --- China comes across another body, this one in a patch of yucca plants.  And this is someone she knew personally. Fun series.

Where Alazeas Bloom by Sherryl Woods --- Trying to finish the Sweet Magnolias series--- Lynn Morrow is going through a rough divorce while her soon-to-be-ex is not holding up his financial obligations. The Sweet Magnolias set in to help.  A surprise ending.

The Paris Vendetta by Steve Berry --- Cotton Malone is asked by his friend, Henrik Thorvaldsen, to help him find the ones responsible for his son's murder. But when Henrik's plans involve murder, Cotton has second thoughts. Always a very involved plot, but a terrific read as are all of Berry's books.

I Am the Only Running Footman by Martha Grimes --- I love Grimes' book titles!! This is an older series but always a good one. Richard Jury investigates two murders that are seemingly related but happened miles and months apart. He has help from a local constable, Brian Macalvie who's convinced it's the same killer.

The Perfect Lie by Dinah McCall --- CIA agent Jonah Slade has been undercover in Columbia bringing a drug lord to justice.  When he finds out his son [who he didn't know existed] has been kidnapped in retaliation, he works with the FBI to find him.  A good story line, well-written.

Tell Me by Lisa Jackson --- This book was kind of slow and dragging for the first half or so, seemed like a lot of repetition in what was being discovered by the protagonist, reporter Nikki Gillette, and her fiance', Pierce Reed and his partner, detectives investigating an old murder. Interesting premise, however: woman accused of murdering her daughter and wounding her other two children, then serving 20 years for the crime, all the while maintaining her innocence and now being released because her son [who was a young child at the time testified at the trial and is now recanting his testimony]. The last several chapters pick up speed and there's a surprise ending.

Killer Keepsakes by Jane K. Cleland --- Antique appraiser/auction house owner, Josie Prescott's assistant didn't come to work after returning from vacation and when Josie gets concerned and goes to her home to check on her, she finds a man dead on the couch and her assistant missing. Great story, finished it in a day.
