Are many / any of you using this feature? I've almost quit visiting the Forums (and I miss them!) because of the endless drama that seems to errupt in the most innocently intended topics. And I notice that frequently the posters who set my teeth on edge seem to be a same handful over and over.  I'm all for open discussion, but - honestly - I find myself just wanting to scream sometimes. I'm guessing this feature would make for some gaps in the thread, but maybe that's not a bad thing. Anyone tried it?

Introduced 10/27/2008.

This feature allows you to ignore a member (or members) whose topics bother you, bore you, etc.  When you have ignored a member, you will be able to go anywhere in forums and never "hear" from the member again, while seeing all the rest of the posts in topics.

How to use it:

  • Go to the Post of a member you want to ignore and Click the link "ignore this member" (the link on the bottom right of each post, after the text of the post)
    • This will work from ANY post made by the member.
  • Abracadabra!  All of his or her posts (past and future) will not show when you look at the forums.
  • You can "un-ignore" a member from an ignored post as follows:
    • Click Show Post Anyway on an ignored post
    • Click "stop ignoring this member" (the link on the bottom right of the revealed post)

Other info:

  • The ignored person will not "know" or be told that she or he is being ignored
  • You will not be able to "know" if you are being ignored by anybody
  • You cannot "ignore" for anyone else - just for yourself
  • The only place to ignore is on a post by that person -- the link is below the text she or he Posted
  • You can ignore as many people as you like
  • If you ignore a member and she or he then starts a forum topic, you WILL see the topic title in the forum list.

We think this is a great way to shut out any forum voices that may get on your nerves and spoil your day, while letting the other voices come through loud and clear.  We do have plans to expand this "self-moderation" aspect of the forums soon, but we think this is a good place to start!

Please note that the thinking "they can just ignore me if they don't like it" is not a license to post anything you like, and it will not serve as an excuse for bad behavior in forums - we will still see everything of course and we will act appropriately on any Policy violations that are reported to us.

I have used it from the beginning for three members.  Recently, I just added one more.   I just makes my day more pleasant to not even see the avatar nor skim over the post of people who annoy me.   They probably don't annoy anyone else but it makes my day happier, so why not?

I will add that I hope anyone that I annoy, for whatever reason, isn't even reading this because they have me on ignore.

I have it set on 3 or 4 people. My life is stressful enough without irritation from posts on an internet forum.

If you feel like the forums would be more please to you by using it on someone, go ahead and use it. If a conversation seems incomplete without their post you just have to click on the view this post and read that specific one.

I've never used it, I don't really have anyone that annoys me enough to want to use it.  If I did, I can easily scroll past their posts without needing an Ignore button.  I can ignore without it.

gingerkitty, I agree with you. It's easy enough to ignore someone without using the button. After all, if they annoy you that much, you surely know their names (though you may have had to relearn their names, after the latest privacy feature update).

Thank you, Bernhard!  After cleaning coffee off myself and the computer, I wanted to say that I needed that laugh.

I can ignore without it.

Not me.  Its like staring at bad accidents.

I also read threads without really looking who the response is from, now I can't accidentally read a thread from them. I only use it on people that I just really have never seen a post out of that I cared to read. Someone who disagrees with me, I am all for *hearing*, but people who open their mouth and stupid comes out...why even have their post show up on my screen if I don't have to? Love the ignore function, wish I had one in real life.

I haven't used it yet. I probably will though, there are a few people that always make me think about it.

I've never used it, but I tend to not even read most of the forums where a lot of the high drama occurs. Mostly I read and post in here and then a few of the genre forums, and things are fairly generally sedate. Most of the time I'm pretty good at ignoring folks who annoy me, and they are so few and far between that it's not worth it to me to bother.

Bernhard- you made me laugh, and that is no easy feat! Thanks I do have a question, and I hope this is the right spot... I'm new to PBS- I noticed other members have a "sign" at the top of their bookshelf indicating if they have a deal going on. Can you or someone out there who isn't ignoring me tell me how to go about doing that? Thanks

ROTFL @ Bernhard!  Julie, just go to account, then settings, then along the top are blue links click the one that says "Public Profile" and fill it with everything you'd like to say!

I promise not to ignore you  ;)

Actually I've thought about it, but so far haven't.  Although I've suggested to others the benefit of using it.  Frankly life's too short to get upset over a forum post.  If you tend to take things personally, that ignore button is your best option.

Besides... I have teenagers, I'm used to being ignored.  Doesn't stop me though.

lol

Sandra, I just want you to know that I'm considering coming out with my own brand of pop-up keyboard and monitor wipes.  As long as I can keep people laughing I think business will be good.  ;)

I'm rather like Melanie. At times, it's exactly like an accident. You know you don't want/need to look, but somehow you end up doing it anyway. And I usually blow it off if I feel the person is getting on MY case. But I find it harder to ignore when they start berating someone else who in no way deserves it.

At least it's a nice option and easy enough to turn off on for a member. I like the way it works, allowing you to unhide the ignored posting if you choose within a thread.

Bernhard, I will be the first in line to purchase your pop-up wipes!  I don't laugh that hard nearly often enough.

I have used it for a couple of frequent posters.  While I don't find them annoying I don't find anything they write as being worth reading.

I don't bother with it.  I usually avoid the controversial threads because I come here to have fun.  If I happen to check one out I just skim the obnoxious threads.  If the threads bother you then just don't open the controversial ones. It's a message board and I think people take things way too personally.

At first I thought I would just exercise restraint and ignore without the button, but it was not to last and I started using it.  Now, I can't stop!  LOL.  Try it, if you don't like it you can always "unignore".

I've also learned to stop scrolling when I see Bernhards avatar, swallow whatever liquid is in my mouth (coffee, water) before continuing.  I only need to clean off my keyboard once to learn my lesson.  LOL
