Hi Everyone,

First off, thank you for looking at this thread and considering helping me.

I have a list of "Unpostables" that some members have said that they MAY be Postable and that I could get credits for them instead of giving them away.  I am very low on credits and would love to have these books find a new home.
Can you please tell me what you think on each one?
Thank you!!!!!!  :)   Dawn

All books listed below are also "unpostable" but some seem NEW, just couldn't find the ISBN numbers, etc.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom by Suzanne Weyn - Scholastic book 2008, appears to be New, never read.

The Turning by Justin Scott  - Yellowed pages

Savages by Shirley Conran - Cover is worn, binding creased

The Walls Came Tumbling Down by Babs H. Deal - Very worn but all in tact and readable.

Sprocket, Dog Detective by Louise Gikow (a Fraggle Rock book) - Cover is slightly dirty, otherwise in good condition

No One Knows Where Gobo Goes by Mark Saltzman - cover slightly dirty, otherwise in good shape

Critters of the Night:  Purple Pickle Juice by, Erica Farber and J.R. Sansevere - cover worn, pages folded/dog eared

The Biggest Dinosaurs by Michael Berenstain - Cover slightly worn

Dogstar by Hazel Edwards - Nothing wrong with this book, it just shows that it's been read.

The Constitutions - Vatican II in Plain English by, Bill Huebsch with Paul Thurmes - Highlighting Throughout, but in Great condition

Woolly Wooly by Joy Cowley - Nothing really "Wrong" with it, just shows that it's been read.

Ripeka's Carving by Jenny Hessell -  Looks good, been read a couple times

Dad's Bathtime by Gwen Pascoe - Cover slightly worn, the rest looks great

Hare and Space Museum by Julie McNally and Timothy Cahill - (Little Landoll's Looney Tunes Storybooks) This is just an older book... great freebie for small children.

The book with highlighting isn't postable.  The only ones that seem questionable are the few that sound like they might come close to "excessively worn", but I've never been good at making that call, and maybe the few with dirty covers.  If they're not stained, then maybe the dirt could be carefully removed using some goo gone or zippo fluid?  I've had some luck using both for more than just sticker residue, but sometimes dirty is permanent.  As far the books that don't have ISBN's, if they're in good condition you should post them without.  If you're in doubt about any of your books you could always offer them as freebies with an order, then they go to good homes and you get credits.  Most of your books sound postable to me, though.  Having been read, being slightly worn, even the yellow pages, all of these things are acceptable under the guidelines and are simply signs of being used books.

Clean the covers on the ones that are dirty - you can do it in a way that they won't get liquid damaged.  Just use a slightly damp papertowel and a dab of some sort of cleaner - like Orange Clean.

List the ones without ISBN numbers using the system here that allows you to do so.

If in doubt, don't post.  There's no way we can tell if a book is postable just by a description.

These are the ones I would worry about posting:

Savages by Shirley Conran - Cover is worn, binding creased

The Walls Came Tumbling Down by Babs H. Deal - Very worn but all in tact and readable.

Critters of the Night:  Purple Pickle Juice by, Erica Farber and J.R. Sansevere - cover worn, pages folded/dog eared

The Constitutions - Vatican II in Plain English by, Bill Huebsch with Paul Thurmes - Highlighting Throughout, but in Great condition - NOT POSTABLE

My rule of thumb is to consider if the book is worth $3.45 (the cost of a credit).  If not, don't post it.  For kids books, I don't post them unless they are exceptionally clean.  I feel like the kids deserve better than PBS minimum posting condition.  That's just my personal quirk, though.

Good luck! :)

No ISBN doesn't mean it's unpostable. PBS will assign it an ISBN.  For the ones that are questionable or definately unpostable: you can offer them free with an order from your shelf.

Some wear and dog earred pages are allowed.  You don't have to post only brand new looking books.  But the cover has to be intact and not folded up like an accordion.  If almost every page was dog earred I wouldn't post it but if it's just a few that's ok.

Thank you for the help!  These actually are the ones I have listed as FREEBIES in my profile. I'd be willing to send one with every order.... I had some people tell me that a couple of these may be Postable and that way, I could get a credit from them.

I'll clean some of those up, and post the ones without ISBNs.  I've already posted a bunch that didn't have ISBNs and it's work for me.  Tedious! hehe    But if someone wants my book, I'll post it.

Are you SURE that dog earred pages are ok? I was SURE that was NOT allowed.  Ughhhhhhh, my brain is tired.

Thanks again, you are some of my favorite peeps on here!!  :)    Dawn

Some dog earring is ok.  It's when it's every other page that it's bad.  Have you read the help docs and posting guidelines?

General remarks:

  • This is a used-book swapping site; books are not expected to be in like-new condition.
    • Older books may have some page yellowing or spine-creasing or dogeared pages; these are all OKAY.
    • Decirculated library books may have various markings and/or stamps inside or outside or on the page edges of the book; this is OKAY.  These may not obscure text.
    • BookCrossing books may have stickers or stamps or markings on the outside or inside covers or page edges of the book; this is OKAY. These may not obscure text.
    • Hardbacks do NOT have to include their dustjackets.
    • Audiobooks MUST be the original cassettes/CDs, but do NOT have to include the outer "box" that held the set.
    • Audiobooks must be playable.
    • There is an exception to general condition guidelines for textbooks; see below.
    • There is an exception to general condition guidelines for cookbooks; see below.
  • We do NOT have a place for members to describe the condition of a particular copy of a book.
    • ALL books on PBS are expected to be in "good, not excessively worn" condition

Yah, I've read these.....  I get confused tho, because so many people complain in the forums about books they received being in any condition other than Perfect/Like New.  I figure people should buy the book new, if that is what they will only accept. You know what I mean?

You are going to find that there are people who will complain no matter how good the book looks. they don't take the time to read the rules and they don't put RC's on their requests.  It's part of the experience in swapping.  Sorry about them!   ;D

...because so many people complain in the forums about books they received being in any condition other than Perfect/Like New... - I have never seen any complaints about books not being like-new condition. I have seen posts about clear breaking of the rules like obvious water damage, covers not attached, cleaved into two pieces, highlighting, animal (or child) chewings, food and bugs squished in books, peed on books. extremely dirty and stained books. All clearly not postable. There are people with like-new RCs, if you get an order from one of them, then decline and send your book to the next person who orders it.

Read the rules, if your books meets them send it. If it is questionable about not passing the "not excessively worn" then don't post it and leave it in your free list. Ask yourself if you'd want to spend $3.45 on the book (thats the price of a credit). If not, then don't post it.

Melanie,  books that are PEED ON?!  Yikes!!

Yeah, there have been people's complaints on some threads about conditions of books having one out of several possibilities of things that show it's been "read" but nothing that makes it unpostable.  This is right when I joined here about 5 weeks ago, and it scared me out of posting quite a few of my books.

Maybe I could put a Disclaimer in my Profile about the books meeting the guidelines and the "requestor" agreeing that he/she understands this.  Something like "My books are NOT brand new, they HAVE been read at least once and nobody's Llama has spit on them."   hehehehe

*Edited to replace "into" with "out of"... jeeesh, what a goof.  LOL
