Superb and highly readable book about all aspects of life in Germany during WWII - with hundreds of photographs taken at that time. Sample chapters include "The Nazi Economic Miracle", "The Control of Youth", "Women and the Third Reich, "Home Front: Life in Germany" and "Resistance." Anti-semitism, concentration camps, labor, effects of the bombings etc. are all covered. What is most revealing is the near total control Nazis had almost every facet of German life (and the indoctrination of youth from an early age) and the brutal measures they used against any Germans even suspected of questioning Nazism. This of course explains why active resistance was minimal - but of course does not excuse the atrocities of the Germans against their so-called enemies. I've read a lot of books on Naziism and Germany during WWII and this is one of the best, and one of the few that discusses everyday life and the subordination of women to the male-dominated Nazi movement.
