A powerful book that will keep me thinking for weeks. This book had everything from sibling relationships to a small town to environmental issues - it all fit together seamlessly. Dana is the younger sister that leaves the small town after her life is turned upside down. Peyton is her niece, who is trying to deal with the death of her mom and the return of a long lost aunt. Together they narrate this book with each having chapters told through their own voices and I think having these two characters tell the story make this book even bigger and better than if it had been told by one or the other.

Dana Carlson goes back home after many years of absence and finds clues left behind after her sister's untimely death. There is an environmental mystery to solve that may have caused her sister's death and the illnesses of quite a few people in town. There's also anger directed at Dana from her family members, and a secret unfolds; one that left Black Bear, Minnesota, when Dana left town all those years ago. Carla Buckley has done it again. She's obviously researched extensively in environmental matters. I liked the beginning of each chapter that opened with a bit of information about different forms of sea life. It was interesting how that info intertwined with the story. I really enjoyed this book. Very smart!
