This is one of my daughter's favorite books by one of her favorite authors!
Just as good as all of Eva Ibbotsons books, this one is about mermaids, selkies and other creatures who live on their hidden island.
Wacky aunts, mermaids, selkies and a kraken. And, of course, sensible children. Very good Ibbotson. This is the trade-paperback sized version.
Mildly wicked and naughty writing for kids to devour. Does not try to 'be good' in proscribed ways. The book has a little swearing and some of the characters- adults, not kids-encounter friendly people of a nudist colony. Lots of fun, quirky characters, and a sense of a full story well told.
Now for real facts about the story itself: aunts on island of magical creatures need help: they kidnap children. Some of the children enjoy themselves, others do not. Trouble ensues. Complications arise. Other people show up. The island and the aunts and their magical creatures are threatened by the outside world. Things slowly start to work out- the characters use their wits, any item at hand, and all luck that comes their way. Courtroom drama. Lots of commentary on modern life. Fun and satisfying ending.
See? No spoilers.
Wonderful fun book with characters that make you want them to be your friend! Shows that you don't have to be family to be a family and have a love that is real. A great read.
British author, rather entertaining for adults, too.
The aunts take care of injured sea creatures - both real and mythical - on their remote island, but they are getting old, and decide to kidnap some children and train them to take their places someday. I don't usually care for this kind of fantasy, but this one is very well done and has an environmental message as well.
By the award winning author of Which Witch, story of three aunts. They are in search of caretakers for their island. So they "kidnap" children.
