I'm probably getting a 2 year old Jack Russell terrier. Has any1 had them; what do you think of them?

high. maintenance.

they are extremely smart, high energy little dogs who need a JOB!!! or they will find one for themselves and you probably won't like it. they also don't put up with crap very well, and will use their teeth to show their displeasure. terriers through and through. barky. can be destructive. can be dog-aggressive, especially with dogs of the same sex. can be awesome and fun sport dogs, but you need to be the kind of owner suited to dogs with serious exercise and training requirements. they are not for the casual dog owner. they were bred to work and they haven't forgotten this.

Thanks for the info! I live in the country and have 160 acres, so space isn't a problem. I have another dog, who is of the same sex as the jack russell.

I have one. I have to agree with Katie. Very High maintenence. If you already have a dog, I don't recommend the Jack Russell because he WILL bully your pet. They are not very tolerate of children. Not the kind of dog who puts up with kids pulling and pushing.

They are very smart and fun, if you have plenty of time.

I did get the dog. She gets along very well with my other dog. She runs outside all day and rarely comes in the house, so when she does she behaves well. We do have to be careful with her around little kids because she does jump on them and the kids will sometimes be a little mean(unintentionally). Overall, I like her a lot.

I am in my 60's and my hubby is in his 70's and we have a true Jack Russell...meaning that "Jack Russell Terriers" are the ones with short legs as oppossed to Parson Russell Terriers that have the long legs.We got her as a rescue from an abusive owner. And she still does not have any issues.

Our youngest son had a Parson Russell Terrier and they had to find him a new home as he was totally uncontrolable ,he tore up everything, and wouldn't mind anyone. They got a Yorkie-Poo and are extremely happy with it!

Our "Muffin"gets along great with all other animals and LOVES kids. She has never had a problem with the kids she has met at street parties that our city has once a month. We put her in her stroller and kids flock to her like flies to sugar. They grab, pat ,kiss and maul her and she is fine. She loves everyone for that matter. At home she lives with two cats and they all play great togerther. All of our friends invite her along when we go to their homes because she is so well behaved. And she gets along with their pets. We take her for walks all over our neighbor hood and all of her friends...both two and four legged...meet and greet each other.

We can take her anyplace without a leash and she never leaves our side. At home she plays like any other breed and is not hyper. She gets excited when we have company but is totally controllable.

I'm not sure what is meant by the high maintainence; but she gets bathed once a month and actually stands and put her head down to have her Advantage-Multi put on. She air dries in a very short time.

We have never had a small dog before and we couldn't be happier or more please with her. She is an indoor dog and has never chewed anything except her toys and she has never even destroyed one of her toys! She came already house broke!

She travels absolutely perfectly any place we go and even has a window she lays in front of and watches cars from when we take trips in our motor home. We take her shopping anyplace that pets are allowed but her favorite store is Jo-Annes. The grandkids put her in her stroller and they have a ball!

I am so thankful that we didn't let anything we heard stop us from getting her.

I normally don't like small dogs, but I actually do like my new dog a lot. She is the sweetest little thing!

My parents have one, and it is the exact opposite for a "true" jack russell. They rescued him and he was obviously abused, but now he is an incredibly loving lap dog who is bullied by the cats!

Ack. My ex boyfriend had a Jack Russell. That little thing HATED me. He would pee and poo in my shoes. On my side of the bed. On my chair. Never on his stuff. He also bit all the kids walking by our house too.

We have two Jack Russells and they are so much fun!  They are brothers and are 1 1/2 yrs old.  We live in town and the only time they bark is if someone walks right past the backyard - we don't have a fence, just the invisible fence system and that works well with them.  When they come in from playing they wipe their feet on the rug.  One of them tries to use the dust mop so he won't have to walk back down the steps to the rug (so cute!) but he does do it.  At night they come into the office and the sweetest of the two will whine to go to bed.  Even though their room is open during the day, they will not go to bed until I tell them to get into their beds and put their door up.  Then they both lay down and go to sleep.  One has to sleep with his green teddy bear!  I swear, they think they are human.  If we are outside, I'll say house and they run to the back door.  They play tag and hide-and-go-seek around a maple in our yard.  I had never had Jack Russells before and I don't know what we ever did without them!
