School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-- In this story concerning the environment, a fisherman named Jack finds that his catches begin to contain many small and sickly fish. One day he hauls in an ailing seal. After Jack helps it to revive, the seal leads him to better fishing grounds. That night on his boat, a sleepy Jack receives a plea from the polluted sea asking him to come to its aid. When Jack returns to port, he helps organize the villagers and makes them realize that there are things that they can do locally to help fight the destruction of the sea. Then Jack begins to sail up and down the coast to tell his story. While the story is contrived and the message from the sea seems especially intrusive and didactic, the book may fill curriculum needs. The soft pastel illustrations do much to enhance the text with their sensitive lines clearly portraying the gentle friendship between Jack and the seal. The notion that individuals can take action provides a positive approach for young children who might be overwhelmed by the scope of environmental issues. A useful addition to school units and a good discussion launcher. --Lori A. Janick, Parkwood Elementary School, Pasadena, Tex.
