This is a quick biography of the math teacher made famous in the movie "Stand and Deliver", aimed middle-school readers. The author, also a teacher, has an obvious soft spot for the subject but is not blind to the fact that he was human and had flaws as well as strengths. The book goes back to Escalante's early days in Bolivia, as well as his first days in America. These glimpses help the reader to understand the adult that became a folk hero for effectively teaching calculus in the Los Angeles County school system's inner city schools.

RATING: 3 1/2 stars, rounded up to 4 stars.
