James Hannay (17 February 1827 - 9 January 1873), novelist and journalist, was born atDumfries, Scotland, and at age 13 joined the Royal Navy from which he was dismissed 5 years later. The greater part of his career was occupied with miscellaneous journalism in England and Scotland. In 1850 he was a contributor to Punchand edited the Edinburgh Courant from 1860-1864. For the last five years of his life he was British Consul at Barcelona.
