New to me author

I am reading The Summer Queen, Elizabeth Chadwick's 1st of Eleanor of Aquitaine trilogy. As with all her books, I appreciate the 'flesh' she puts on the bare bones of historical facts.

This will serve as my "Favorite Author" book. :)

What can be better than starting the new year with Uhtred?  I'm reading the latest Saxon adventure by Bernard Cornwell, The Flame Bearer.  It will serve for a book by a favorite author in the 2017 challenge.

Hello Historical Pals --- Happy New Year to all.  As usual, I am reading mostly mysteries, however most of them, if not all, are historical.  It seems I try and try to read true historical fiction and I just get called back to my mysteries!!!  The most recent one I finished is by David Morrell, "Inspector of the Dead".  The second in the Thomas deQuincey books. Now I am on to "A Murder at Rosamund's Gate" by Susanna Calkins. 

I'm doing exactly the same thing Linda!  I just have to finish up reading The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins (not very good actually IMHO) first.  The Flame Bearer will be my entry for the favorite author category of the new challenge

"A Pawn for a Queen" by Fiona Buckley.  Making my way-slowly-thru her Ursula Blanchard series.

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah :)

Holly --- My daughter gave me "Nightingale" for Christmas but I have yet to begin.  Right now I am working on "Mrs. Roosevelt's Confidante" by Susan Elia Macneal.  Not too far into it, but I think it will be good enough.  I have been reading this series from the beginning and some are better than others.  We shall see how this one turns out.

Holly The Nightingale is excellent, Becky I really liked Mrs Roosevelt's Confidante. I really enjoy reading about Eleanor Roosevelt.

I finished A Study in Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas last night. Another spin on Sherlock Holmes. It was okay.

Alice -- I too enjoy books featuring Eleanor --- thus, I enjoyed all of the Elliott Roosevelt mysteries and hated to see them end.

Beginning A Stranger in Mayfair by Charles Finch

I started Hanging Mary by Susan Higginbotham yesterday.  Plotting involved with Lincoln's assassination.  Excellent so far!

I finished my first h/f read of the new year, The Flame Bearer by Bernard Cornwell.  This is the latest installment of the Saxon Tales featuring our forum hero, Uhtred.  Uhtred is much older, not necessarily wiser, but still his old wisecracking, irreverent self.  At long last he is preparing to invade and take back his ancestral home of Bebbanburg but enemies and events are in his way.  I don't want to say too much and be a spoiler, but I enjoyed this read.  It's not the best book of the series but Uhtred is always worth a read for me!

I am reading Secrets of Sloane House (Chicago World Fair, Bk 1) :: Shelley Shepard Gray set in 1893 Chicago during the World's Fair.  Hmm truthfully not loving it yet, but only about 30 pages in.

LecClier I liked Hanging Mary as well. Very interesting information that I did not know about

Started When Falcons Fall by CS Harris

Carolyn - you are really clipping away thru those C S Harris books! Good, aren't they? I haven't even started anything HF yet this year. Just finished The Loch By Steve Alten - 500+ pages of deep water terror. Every now and then I get in the mood for one of these but not very often!

I find myself overwhelmed and kinda sad for no single reason; just a lot of things built up, so as I often do I am retreating into the loved and familiar by re-reading some favorites.

I started The King's Evil (Restoration, Bk 1) :: Edward Marston

It is set in 1666 London. I don't know much about that time period in England quite interesting

Oh! I read "Hanging Mary" last year.  Very different time period for Higginbotham.  As always with her, well researched and an entertaining read.  

Like Deborah, I'm looking for a comfort read and I just haven't found "the one" lately.

Oh my, I'm a bit obsessed with these books. I just finished When Falcons Fall, it only took me 2 days. Granted, I'm still on vacation so I have plenty of time to read, and I've been hanging out with my doggie who is not doing all that great this past week (cancer), so I feel like I need to be around some familiar friends at the moment. (I'm looking at you, Sebastian!).

That said, I started Conspiracy by SJ Parris, the latest in her Giordano Bruno series (another good friend!)

Completed A Stranger in Mayfair by Charles Finch which I enjoyed.  I like the characters of Charles Lenox  and his wife, Lady Jane, very much.  Graham is a kick, too.  My next read is My Last Dutchess by Daisy Goodwin.  Has anyone read it?

So sorry to hear about your dog, Carolyn.  We lost one of ours to cancer last summer too.

Oh ladies (Carolyn and Cheryl), I'm so sorry to hear about your pups. It's never easy but think about all you've done for them and Carolyn, I hope yours can pull through this. This is a plaque I got for Christmas and I find it to be so true!
