I read this book while living on the Greek islands 30 years, slowly, savoring its poetic epic format (and often looking up words, since Gardener has a taste for sensuous esoteric words not commonly used, but which further heighten his lyrical language). This is a grand book, and I have kept it on my bookshelf for 30 years, rereading it in full once, and reading passages every now and then, just because of the magic of its language and the vividness with which it brings the myths of Jason and Medea (Medeia) to light. It is definitely on my list of the top 100 books I've read in my nearly 60 years - probably 4,000 - 5,000 in all. But now I let it go .......and hope that other lovers of myth and language will delight in it as I have.
