While some categorize Marin as an impressionist or abstractionist, in his own mind he remains a realist, consistently creating his painting from natural forms. Illustrated by Marin's work, Helm carefully considers his place in his generation. Largely self taught and championed early on by Steiglitz, the results demonstrate the full cooperation Helm enjoyed. Marin became the successor to Winslow Homer as THE practitioner in watercolor. Reissued in 1970.
