Before reading this. I thought I knew most of Johnny Cash's life. However, this is a most interesting read. Johnny fought with drugs more times than I imagined. When I was buying his albums, I thought he was already a great musical star. This book explains that he was working towards that goal, but had not reached it in the mid-60s.

I thought the comments by his music teacher were telling. She understood that his raw talent was something that would resonate with music fans and she suggested he stop music lessons and just do his own thing. It's amazing that a concert-trained musician would understand Cash's natural (and rather raw) talent at such an early point. This story is engrossing; I couldn't read it fast enough.
