This is a superb short book. Set on Fire Island during one summer season. The tale is spun in a tightly written lyrical style of flashbacks and rumination of The Old Man of the title. The author shows through the story the many facets of life in a summer resort. Davis makes Fire Island and its people more than just a bunch of wild youths pursued by old want to-be-forever young men in an endless raunchy daze. Life is not quite only a beach even if one lives on a vacation wonderland of sand.
